Using the Official Export to Keep a Complete Copy

Everything you have posted to Instagram โ€” photos, videos, reels, stories, captions, comments and messages โ€” can be exported directly from Meta through the Download Your Information tool. It is the most complete backup available, it is free, and because it comes from the platform itself you never have to hand your credentials to an outside service.

The process lives in Settings, under Accounts Centre, then Your information and permissions. Choose Download your information, pick the account, select a date range and a file format, and submit the request. Meta assembles the archive in the background and emails you a secure link when it is ready. Small accounts finish in minutes; a long-running account with years of messages can take several hours, so it is worth starting well before you actually need the files.

A few habits make this genuinely reliable. Run an export before you deactivate or delete anything, because once an account is gone the option goes with it. Store the archive somewhere encrypted, since it contains private messages alongside your public posts. And if your account is a business asset, repeat the export every few months so your most recent work is always covered.

Alongside the full export, turn on the in-app settings that save a copy of each reel and story to your device as you publish. Combined with the periodic archive, that gives you both an immediate local copy of new work and a complete historical record โ€” without ever needing a third-party tool.
